  5. Post Rehab ACL Training

Post Rehab ACL Training

As a gym owner my role is so much more than training. When I was only a trainer many years ago I would run 40-50 sessions per week and in addition to continuing education, that was pretty much all I did.

Now, things are very different. Most of my time is spent running a business.

I am working on developing relationships in the community, marketing, leadership and a host of other things entrepreneurs need to be doing.

I also run a mentorship program and have several clients I do business coaching with that also takes up a lot of my time.

I have minimal time to train a lot of sessions

That being said I still train, around 10 hours per week with a very limited population.  About 3 years ago I had this interest in watching a knee surgery. The ACL thing seemed to be everywhere and I wanted to learn more about it.  I asked a very well known orthopedic surgeon if I could come and watch so I could learn more about how I can help athletes get back on the field sooner.  He was very open to this and it started a relationship that soon brought me a steady stream of Post Rehab ACL athletes.

The relationship grew to us doing seminars together and our facility becoming to go to facility for an athlete that is post rehab ACL.  Other local doctors saw the results we were getting and sent their people to us as well. It was a great feeling to have the confidence of these doctors.  I knew I needed to develop more expertise in this area so I sought out the best to help me.

I hired Charlie Weingroff, now a close friend, to help me develop a system for training these athletes.  Charlie and I sat down for an entire day and developed a very specific training program for post rehab ACL athletes; he had me thinking ways I had never thought before.  In addition to the program we created a return to play assessment that would give us an idea of when that athlete was ready to play.

Working with these athletes is a challenge. Many of them have never been injured before; many of their parents have no idea about the entire process and some are very nervous for their child to return.  They need to be comfortable that the person their child is working with knows what they are doing. It is always an added bonus when I tell the parents the ONLY athletes I train are post rehab ACL.  In addition to the training I use a mindset component. I give many of them a copy of the book Mindset by Carol Dweck, this book provides a belief system that all things are simply learning experiences and that learning is the only way to improve and grow.

This process is a hard learning experience and when we connect the struggles they are going through now to something that will make them stronger and more resilient in the future it usually seems to hit home.  We address the nutritional side. This is almost always the first time they hear how important nutrition is in the recovery process. When I talk about how bad food causes inflammation and slows the healing process they usually perk up. I will have them keep a journal throughout their time with me.

Most of these athletes have done nothing in terms of cardiovascular training. They are all out of shape because they have done nothing for 4 months. We normally start with cardiac output training, 130-150 BPM 2-4 times per week on their own. We do this until we drive the resting heart rate below 60, then we can crank up the intensity.  Training these athletes keeps me connected to the training process but does not take up so much of my time that I cannot run my business efficiently.

It is something I am passionate about, I love to see these athletes hobble in and then 4 months later be flying around the field. You develop a special bond with these athletes and their families because you played a big supportive role in a challenging time of their life.  As a busy entrepreneur, it provides a perfect balance of being in the trenches and having the time to run a business. I have found my training niche and get better every year.
