Teaching Olympic Lifts
Joshua Bonhotal
The biggest mistake I have seen in teaching Olympic lifts is rushing to get to the full movement, whether from the hang or the floor. I understand there are certain situations where there is pressure from sport coaches or elsewhere to have the athlete snatch/clean right away or at least very early on. Still, these movements require a high degree of technical proficiency and as such a great deal of patience in going through the appropriate progressions. If you don't possess the time or expertise to teach Olympic lifts so they are skillfully performed, don't Olympic lift. In that case, the athletes will get much more out of jump variations and medicine ball throws. To rush into the movement would be like trying to teach someone calculus before they have learned algebra. . . .

Conditioning Under-reaction/ Overreaction
Michael Boyle
My friend Alwyn Cosgrove is fond of saying that any new idea will produce an overreaction in the short term and an under-reaction in the long term. In other words, a good idea will prompt everyone to jump on the bandwagon. One good idea that continues to gain steam is the concept of interval training. We are clearly in the overreaction stage and that is really good. Interval training, often abbreviated as HIIT, for High Intensity Interval Training, is the new darling of the fitness world and in my mind rightfully so. Interval training produces better results in less time. What can be wrong about that? . . .

The HIERARCHY of Fat Loss
Alwyn Cosgrove
I've been training people for a long time. I own a gym that has several trainers training several people. Despite all the athletes we've worked with over the years -- by far the single biggest client request has been fat loss. I (and I'm sure I'm not the exception) have made more money from the fat loss market than any other single client group. Over the years my methods have evolved and been refined by what I see in the gym. Simply put, if I can get 20lbs of fat off a client faster than my competition -- I have a higher demand for my services. . . .

NEVER A LINE AT THE FREE WEIGHTS
Bruce Kelly
The idea for this article came to me recently after a workout at a hotel gym. As usual I was by my lonesome at one end of the facility while everyone else that came in got on their cardio piece of choice to do their imitation of a hamster or a lab rat. . . .

Our "A.C.L." Problem in Womens' Sports
Brett Klika C.S.C.S.
There is a problem in womens' sports in America. If you're involved with female athletics, I'm sure you've heard of the alarming rate at which women are getting injured. Of particular concern are disproportionate knee injuries in women vs. men. Currently statistics indicate that women tear their Anterior Cruciate Ligament at 8 times the rate that men do. This is the dreaded "ACL" injury we often hear about. . . .

Perform Better -- A Life Changing Experience
Justin Levine
The three days of August 6-8 could definitely place in the top five weekends of my life. Yes, the Perform Better team over delivered. I have been to the previous 4 summits and they were good but this one was a "GAME CHANGER". I first want to give a huge shout out to the Perform Better crew and especially Chris Poirier for putting this all together. The presenters were world class, literally. I was fortunate enough to bring two of my young coaches with me and to see their eyes light up when learning from and meeting the likes of Mike Boyle, Robert dos Remedios, Todd Durkin, Alwyn Cosgrove and Thomas Plummer was priceless. Their energy was BIG throughout the entire weekend. . . .
